Chapter 13

When we got to the highway Charlie picked up speed, taking the exit near a service station. He drove until he found a small parking lot with a diner and a few other businesses a little off the main roads. I circled the block once to make sure we hadn’t been followed before I rode back to the van. This is where I managed to rendezvous with him, parking my bike next to the vehicle where Daisy had Sean perched in a sitting position at the side of the van by the time I caught up.

“Now what?” Daisy asked, rubbing her arms and watching Sean.

“Do you have parents? A pack?” I asked, dismounting and taking my place next to Charlie.

“No,” Sean spat. “Don’t tell them. They’ll lead the Hunters to the pack.”

“You can trust us,” I said, holding my hands out with my palms up.

Sean shook his head, closing his eyes when it made it sway a little. Daisy caught him before he toppled over. “No,” Sean said again, gritting his teeth.

“They helped us, Sean,” Daisy told him. “They risked themselves.”

“You’re too trusting,” Sean snapped. “It could be a trap to get us to talk. Make us trust them and then go after the others.”

I looked at Charlie. “Do you need to get the van back? Will you be missed?”

He shook his head, not taking the hint. “No one saw us other than Lucian, he won’t question me.”

My gut twisted, not really believing him but it was too late now, I had to trust he knew what he was doing.

Daisy and Sean were free and that was what mattered.

I took out my cell and dialed Macey’s number.

“Hello,” she said, answering on the first ring.

“It’s me, Mace. I have a couple of kids here that need your help.”

I could hear her moving around and winced when I realized it was after midnight. “Sorry to wake you,” I mumbled.

“It’s okay,” Macey said, her tone taking on her usually chirpy timbre.

I grimaced. “A couple of wolf pups need to return to their pack. They don’t trust me, but they might trust you.”

“Who are you calling?” Daisy said, her voice shrill and panicky.

“A social worker,” I answered.

“Stop telling frightened teenagers that I’m a social worker, Morgan. Some don’t trust us at first,” Macey said, her version of snapping at me. “They usually run when we say social worker.”

I rolled my eyes, giving her the address and she told me she would be there in half an hour.

I jerked my chin at an all-night diner. “How about some food while we wait for my friend?”

Daisy nodded eagerly but Sean still looked wary.

“‘Who did you call?” Charlie murmured, his body so close to mine that his spicy scent enveloped me, and I inhaled deeply.

“A friend,” I explained. “She’s skittish so you’re better off getting out of here. This will go a lot smoother then. We will be fine, don’t worry.”

Charlie looked at me for a moment before agreeing. “Okay, call me to let me know you’re home safely,” he said, stepping in close and leaning down.
